The geological gift of the Médoc terroir is its poor, gravel soil, which forces the vines to develop deep roots to find the nutrients and minerals they need to grow, giving them a unique concentration. The extra few feet altitude in Lascombes vineyards gives the vines the special character that earned them their exceptional ranking of Second Grand Cru Classé. Tasting notes This Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Grand Vin showcases cassis and dark berry fruits balanced beautifully by earthier notes. It is a well-structured wine of depth, complexity and graceful power with long aging potential. Winery Château Lascombes Winery Description On its hillside at the entrance to Margaux, in the heart of the Médoc, Château Lascombes is a Second Great Growth in the 1855 classification. With origins dating back to 1681, the estate has a long history, characterized by pioneering owners, and a terroir of 115 hectares of vines that is recognized as one of the finest in the world for wine production. Since 2022, an ambitious family-oriented renewal has been underway with new owner Gaylon Lawrence, Jr., a lover of Bordeaux wines, and Axel Heinz, a highly respected winemaker who excelled in Tuscany for almost twenty years The Lascombes range of wines reflects the incomparable diversity of the estate’s terroirs. A collector’s Grand Vin, predominantly Cabernet-Sauvignon from gravelly soils, refocused on the historic terroir, offers a graceful, powerful expression of the classic Bordeaux style. The second wine – Chevalier de Lascombes – presents the freshness and vibrant fruit so dear to Margaux lovers. A new single-terroir Merlot, La Côte – Lascombes, embodies the estate’s ambitious renewal and breaks with any notion of the status quo. The terroir of La Côte features a thin layer of clay on a limestone slab, with veins of blue clay, which is a signature of the greatest Merlot terroirs and delivers depth, finesse and intensity. "The idea is to keep Lasombes true to its terroir but to redefine its character and identity in the context of modern Bordeaux." – Axel Heinz Winemaker Axel Heinz Winemaker Bio An accomplished and renowned oenologist and viticulturist, notably for his resounding successes in Italy with the prestigious “super-Tuscans” Ornellaia and Masseto, Axel Heinz agreed to lead Lascombes’ renewal in 2022. Or, as he puts it, “to express the great classicism of the Médoc while respecting the estate’s identity.” It’s a challenge that makes sense in the extraordinary career of this man with roots in both Munich (where he and his father were born), and his mother’s native city of Bordeaux. He studied agricultural engineering at Bordeaux Sciences Agro and then oenology at Bordeaux’s Faculté d’Œnologie, before beginning his career in wine, first in the Médoc and then Saint Émilion. In 2005, he set off on an epic Italian adventure that has made him a respected voice in the world of wine and beyond. “Nature reigns. I like to listen to the raw material in each plot. It expresses itself in a way that is unique to each vintage, and you can’t go against it.”
