This audacious new wine comes from an unexpected clay-limestone parcel in the Médoc, which includes veins of the same Eocene blue clay found under Pomerol’s greatest estates. Region Margaux AOC Appellation Margaux Varietal Composition 100% Merlot Vineyard Details The parcels of La Côte slope gently towards the estuary, about a kilometer and a half away, covering 5 hectares. They have been planted with Merlot since the 1980s. The proximity of the Gironde naturally regulates the temperature. La Côte’s terroir is particularly rare, especially for Bordeaux’s left bank and perfectly suited to the expression of the sensitive Merlot variety. The soil’s unique structural characteristic is its thin layer of clay on a limestone slab, with veins of blue clay. The blue clay is a signature of the greatest Merlot terroirs including some in Bordeaux’s right bank and in Tuscany. Tasting notes This single-terroir Merlot reveals vibrant, ripe fruit complemented by subtle notes of sweet spices on the nose. On the palate, the sumptuous balance of the vintage is evident, with a dense texture and velvety power, supported by juicy, saline acidity, the hallmark of great limestone terroirs. "The idea is to keep Lasombes true to its terroir but to redefine its character and identity in the context of modern Bordeaux." – Axel Heinz Winemaker Axel Heinz Winemaker Bio An accomplished and renowned oenologist and viticulturist, notably for his resounding successes in Italy with the prestigious “super-Tuscans” Ornellaia and Masseto, Axel Heinz agreed to lead Lascombes’ renewal in 2022. Or, as he puts it, “to express the great classicism of the Médoc while respecting the estate’s identity.” It’s a challenge that makes sense in the extraordinary career of this man with roots in both Munich (where he and his father were born), and his mother’s native city of Bordeaux. He studied agricultural engineering at Bordeaux Sciences Agro and then oenology at Bordeaux’s Faculté d’Œnologie, before beginning his career in wine, first in the Médoc and then Saint Émilion. In 2005, he set off on an epic Italian adventure that has made him a respected voice in the world of wine and beyond. “Nature reigns. I like to listen to the raw material in each plot. It expresses itself in a way that is unique to each vintage, and you can’t go against it.”
